In today’s class, we watched a video called, “Deep Fakes.”
This video was about the challenges of knowing the truth with the society we live in today. Deep fakes are videos where you photoshop someone else’s face onto another persons body. It promotes the intent to deceive, falsify, and alter the truth. There is a fine line between whether deep fakes are promoting freedom of expression or criminalizing speech parody.
Prior to watching this video, I had known about deep fakes already. I think it’s a very scary concept, mainly because these videos are so realistic looking. It’s also difficult to punish someone for creating these videos because it’s our right of freedom of expression. I’m curious to see if there will be anything cryptic videos throughout the 2020 election and what the outcome of those will be.
